Profiteering in Asia and North America

Pelvic mesh use is set to grow rapidly in Asia and North America, according to a new report, which claims stress incontinence and prolapse is on the rise.

Here at Sling The Mesh, however, we are adamant these women’s health issues are not increasing – they have always been around. Instead, the real driving force is this:

Mesh marketing is on the rise in countries where there has been little to no media coverage and no patient advocacy around the mesh scandal.

A report by InsightAce Analytics claims the global female mesh market is currently worth more than $104 million and is set to grow by more than 11% by 2031. Furthermore it predicts:

North America forecast:

“Favorable government rules, regulations, reimbursement procedures, and rising healthcare spending in the region. Furthermore, rising awareness among women about the problems and treatment of POP and SUI, as well as rising Research and Development investments in the region, are expected to drive growth in the female pelvic implants market.”

Asia Pacific forecast:

“The region’s market is likely to be driven by an increasing population and an increase in pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence in the coming years. Growth is partly attributed to the implementation of beneficial government policies and increased healthcare spending by public and private entities in these regions.”

The report concludes with a worrying line about an investigation into counterfeit resin used to make some Boston Scientific mesh slings to treat female incontinence:

Fake mesh!

In 2019, The FDA completed an evaluation of data about counterfeit resin used to produce Boston Scientific’s vaginal mesh.  The sale of these devices is now restricted to orders from a surgeon.
